Looking into the contemporary recontextualisation of ‘the archive’, this thesis considers the archive as a resource, and archiving as an act, for art creation. As opposed to a historical focus dedicated to the preservation of a singular truth, archiving in recent years has transformed into an act of documentation and reconsideration. Archival material can no longer be believed to be an objective window to the past. Through newfound interests and possibilities for archival practices, individuals can claim accountability and bring attention to otherwise not remembered perspectives.

By analysing works from Paul Soulellis, Angela Genusa, Nestor Siré & Julia Weist and Alexandra Bell, this thesis explores the perspective of the archiving artist. Through art practices —both within the digital network, and as physical objects, artists are using acts of archiving to shift the authority of shaping new narratives.
