ARCHIVING, RECORDING, REMEMBERING;

In this exhibition, I am exploring these concepts through a format of association and sensory triggers. I am developing a performance / installation, in which I, together with the audience, explore the creation of memories in real time. It will explore an understanding of remembrance and the growth of that remembrance as an ambient.

Art engages with what is held in common. Its creation, formation, and consideration is as much part of a process, as the output of distinct and selective remembrance. It plays with the levels of inclusion and exclusion in the same way as memory does. Its meaning is always transactive as it is the result of complex and dynamic processes of interpretation, contestation and translation. Memory is both a concept and driver in my work, and it takes form in both literal and more abstract ways. I am exploring these modes of remembering and the fragmentation connected to, that by working with archival material or archiving structures. It’s this ‘how’ we remember —how are memories shaped and how do they grow over time, that I am exploring in this exhibition.

This ‘how’ of the remembrance, is a concept I try to explore through space and ambient, and try to translate beyond that memory. Archiving plays a role in this, in the way that it in essence is an accumulation or documentation of the evidence of the memory. To archive, is to claim a perspective, to hold accountable or to suggest a narrative. This exhibition aims to find ways to interconnect these concepts between the space and the audience.

space REQUIREMENTS;

light enough to see and move in (natural light would be ideal), ‘dark’ enough to see the projection clearly in
--> projector is HD and visual is high contrast (black on white) so should not cause to many issues

space would ideally be rather big, at least 20m2
Wall in the back, ideally 3 wall bordering, but not a necessity.

setup NEEDS;
empty wall, desk and chair, projector, projector mount, hdmi to USB-c converter, power supply / extension cord, (potentially gopro for documentation)

SETUP__performance
structure__WORK

The ‘first’ action in the performance would take form as a performance of a poem by the artist on her laptop. The laptop will be connected to a projector. No sound will be playing. Just the writing, and with that the narration. The artist will be taking the audience along in the creation of a memory.

It is an ambience of a memory, a memory of a place that existed over time, but never all at once, a memory that never formed actively, only in retrospect.
Act 1;
A memory, performed live.
Act 2;
Remembrance, through records.
the second ‘act’ of the performance would take place in the space. Through a series of actions in recording, documenting and accumulating, the artist will be creating a direct ambience of the memory that just took place. Not one of a direct visualisation, but rather, like the first act, in a way of capturing loose parts, the distinct details or more abstract ambience.

This will be done through a series of interventions in the space, recorded by the artist, but created by the audience (unknowingly).
SPECIFICS OF ACT. 2 ARE STILL TO BE DECIDED UPON AFTER FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION AND REFLECTION

MATERIAL cost; tbd

Specific list of needed materials still to be defined, mainly for ‘interventions in the space’.
(expected expenses; paper, tape, markers, maybe printing

EQUIPMENT cost; nothing

all equipment needed should (?) be available within the college or provided by the artist

SPACE ‘cost’; depending

Potentially for repainting walls / adding wall structures for installation for the performance
